From Middle English blewbothel, from blew (“blue”) + bothel (“flower in the Asteraceae famFrom Middle English blewbothel, from blew (“blue”) + bothel (“flower in the Asteraceae family”). In sense 2, a shortening of bluebottle fly. The fly was so named because it resembles the bluebottle flower in colour.
