From Middle English difficulte, from Middle French and Anglo-Norman difficulte and their eFrom Middle English difficulte, from Middle French and Anglo-Norman difficulte and their etymon Latin difficultas, from difficul, older form of difficilis (“hard to do, difficult”), from dis- + facilis (“easy”); see difficile and difficult.
