The rule in short

How to choose between another, other, the other, others and the others, which of them need a noun after them, and how to say one more, a different one or the rest.

FormWhat comes after itMeaningExample
anothera singular countable noun, or one, or nothingone more, or a different oneHave another biscuit.
another + numbera plural nounthat many moreWe need another two chairs.
othera plural or uncountable noun (after the, my, no… also a singular noun)different ones, not theseShe speaks other languages too.
the othera singular noun, or one, or nothingthe second of two, the last one leftWhere is the other key?
the othera plural nounall the rest of a groupThe other guests left early.
othersnothingsome different people or thingsSome like it; others don't.
the othersnothingall the rest of a groupAnna is ready, but the others are still eating.

Another is one word: an + other written together. Because it already contains an, you cannot put a, the or my in front of it, and it normally goes with a singular noun. The main exception is a number or few: another three weeks means three more weeks, and another few days means a few more days.

Other in front of a noun never changes. It has no -s, even when the noun is plural: other students, the other students. It can follow words like the, my, some, any and no: my other sister, no other way.

With no noun after it, the plural form takes -s: others, the others (in speech also other ones, the other ones). In the singular, other cannot stand alone: say another, another one, the other or the other one.

The changes the meaning. Others means some other people or things, not all of them: Some students walk to school; others take the bus. The others means everyone or everything that is left in a group you both know: Anna is at the door, and the others are in the car.

Learn two patterns as units. With two things, use one … the other: One bag is mine, and the other is Tom's. With a large group, use some … others: Some passengers sleep on the plane; others watch films.

Each other means that each person does the same thing to the other or the others: The two sisters phone each other every day means that each sister phones the other one. It is not the same as themselves, where each person does something to himself or herself; the lesson on reflexive pronouns compares the two.

Answer key

A. Another goes with one thing: one more or a different one. Other with no word before it goes with a plural or uncountable noun. The other is the second of two or the rest of a known group.

  1. another
  2. the other
  3. other
  4. the other
  5. another
  6. another

B. With no noun after it: another = one more or a different one; the other = the second of two; others = some different people or things; the others = all the rest of a known group.

  1. the others
  2. Others
  3. the others
  4. another
  5. the other

C. Another + one thing (or a number); other + plural or uncountable noun; the other = the second of two or the rest of a group; others and the others stand alone; each other = A does it to B, and B does it to A.

  1. another
  2. other
  3. others
  4. the others / the other ones
  5. another
  6. each other / one another

D. One more + singular noun = another + noun. Three more + plural noun = another three + noun. The rest of them = the others. Other can follow my, your, the; another cannot.

  1. Tom ate another slice of pizza.
  2. The builders will be here for another three weeks. / The builders will be here for another 3 weeks.
  3. Where is my other shoe? / Where is the other shoe?
  4. The others stayed until midnight. / All the others stayed until midnight.

E. Another and other come before the noun. Others and the others stand alone. Each other comes after the verb or preposition.

  1. Can I have another piece of cake?
  2. The other students are waiting outside. / Are the other students waiting outside?
  3. Some people agreed, but others did not agree. / Some people did not agree, but others agreed.
  4. The neighbours have never said hello to each other. / Have the neighbours never said hello to each other?

F. Another is one word and goes with one thing (or a number). Other before a noun has no -s. Without a noun: another, the other, others, the others. A does it to B and B to A: each other.

  1. Let's meet another day, when you're less busy. / Let's meet some other day, when you're less busy. — Another is written as one word.
  2. There were no other options, so we took the bus. — Before a noun, other has no -s: no other options.
  3. Some students live near the university, and others live far away. / Some students live near the university, and other students live far away. — With no noun after it, the plural form is others.
  4. There are two roads to the village. One is short, and the other is very beautiful. (✓) — This sentence is right: with two things, English says one … the other.
  5. Can I have another two minutes, please? (✓) — This sentence is right: another + a number + a plural noun means that many more.
  6. This knife isn't very sharp. Do you have another? / This knife isn't very sharp. Do you have another one? — In the singular, other cannot stand alone: another or another one (or, for several, others).
  7. I have three cousins. One lives in Spain and the others live in Italy. / I have three cousins. One lives in Spain and the other two live in Italy. — Two cousins are left, so the plural form with no noun is the others (or the other two).
  8. I don't like this hotel. Let's find another hotel. / I don't like this hotel. Let's find another one. — Another goes with one thing: another hotel.

G. One … the other for two things; some … others for a large group; the others for the rest of a known group; another + number for more; each other when A does it to B and B to A.
